A.R.I.D.E.

Class Name:   Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) Training

Prerequisite:  Limited to sworn law enforcement officers who are trained and proficient in the use of the NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs), including the use of Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus.

Description:  ARIDE training provides refresher training on the use of the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs) and information on identifying persons driving under the influence of drugs.  While this training is not a substitute for DRE training, participants leave with a better understanding of the effects of drugs on a person’s ability to operate a vehicle safely and how to identify the signs and symptoms caused by many different prescription and illicit drugs.

Drug Recognition Expert

Class Name:   Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) School

Classroom Training:  April 8, 2024 through April 19, 2024 (Monday through Friday Only)

Class Time:  1000 – 1800 hrs.

Location: Baltimore County Police Department Training Academy, 7200 Sollers Point Road, Dundalk, MD 21222

Certification Training: April 22, 2024 through April 25, 2024

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Final Knowledge Exam: May 9, 2024

Location: Baltimore County Police Department Training Academy, 7200 Sollers Point Road, Dundalk, MD 21222

Prerequisite:  Limited to sworn law enforcement officers with a minimum of two years of patrol experience who are trained and proficient in the use of the NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs).

Description:  This will be a combined DRE Pre-School followed immediately by the 7-Day DRE School for those who successfully complete the Pre-School.  Those wishing to attend must already be trained and be proficient with the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.  A DRE School Application must be completed and submitted to Sergeant Tom Morehouse, Baltimore County Police Department via email at tmorehouse@baltimorecountymd.gov by February 15, 2024. A DRE School application for this class may be obtained below.  Applicants accepted into the class will be notified by email after the application deadline.  Students must attend all training sessions without exception.  All manuals and equipment will be provided to Maryland law enforcement officers accepted into the school.

Drug Recognition Expert Instructor Development Course

Date: June 11, 2024 to June 12, 2024

Time: 0800 – 1600 hrs.

Location:  Maryland State Police Education and Training Division, 6852 4th Street, Sykesville, MD 21784

Prerequisites:

  • Currently Certified Drug Recognition Expert
  • Standardized Field Sobriety Instructor
  • Must have the approval of your Agency DRE Coordinator or Regional DRE Coordinator to attend

Description: This training is intended to enable currently certified DREs to instruct the IACP Drug Evaluation and Classification curriculum. Students for this 2-day school must already be certified to instruct the NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. Proficiency in the administration of the SFSTs will be evaluated at the beginning of the school through both written and practical exercises.

In addition to the two days of classroom instruction, instructor candidates must instruct for at least two hours during a DRE school and supervise a minimum of two DRE evaluations.

DREs attending Instructor Development Course must be recommended by their agency or regional DRE Coordinator.
